Capability Conversation - Avoidable Rework
Avoidable Rework
Prevent and Reduce Avoidable Rework
What this capability means: Reduce rework created by delayed feedback, unclear objectives, hidden assumptions, large batches, handoffs, weak integration, or preventable quality conditions while preserving legitimate learning and adaptation.
Working well when...
- Rework is classified by cause rather than treated as one defect category.
- Examples, feedback, integration, and quality evidence arrive early.
- Objectivesand constraints remain visible as implementation changes.
- Recurring rework changes the system, practice, or explanatory model.
First-pass conversation
- What recent work had to be redone, and why?
- Which part was learning, correction, misunderstanding, or preventable failure?
- When could the governing evidence have arrived earlier?
- What handoff, batch, objective gap, or system condition contributed?
- What change would reduce recurrence without suppressing adaptation?
Warning signs to discuss
- The same misunderstandings and defects recur.
- Large batches makecorrection expensive and disruptive.
- Late stakeholder, operational, or integration feedback invalidates completed work.
- All change is labeled waste, suppressing discovery and learning.
