Capability Conversation – Onboarding & Capability Development

Onboarding & Capability Development

Enable Effective Onboarding and Capability Development

What this capability means: Help people become effective in their role and context by connecting purpose, capabilities, current work, guidance, practice, evidence, relationships, and continuing support rather than delivering one large batch of information.

Working well when...

  1. Onboarding beginsfrom role, objectives, context, and immediate work.
  2. Learning is sequenced by the next capability needed.
  3. People practice, receive feedback, anddemonstrate application.
  4. Support and organizational memory remain available afterinitial onboarding.

First-pass conversation

  • What must this person be able to accomplish in the first meaningful period?
  • What capabilities and relationships are essential now, and what can wait?
  • What current work can provide safe practice and feedback?
  • How will demonstrated capability be recognized?
  • What continuing support reduces dependence rather than creating it?

Warning signs to discuss

  • New people receive a large content dump detached from current work.
  • Completion of courses or checklists substitutes for capability.
  • Tacit knowledgeremains dependent on a few experts.
  • People learn procedures without purpose, judgment, or adaptation.
