Capability Conversation -Listening, Reaction & Resistance

Listening, Reaction & Resistance

Attend to How People Listen, React, and Resist

What this capability means: Notice how language, distinctions, prior conversations, identity, expectations, fear, status, incentives, authority, and framing shape what people hear and how they respond, without pretending to know private motives.

Working well when...

  1. People are asked what they heard rather than told why they reacted.
  2. Observation, inference, assumption, and motive remain distinct.
  3. Disagreement and legitimate risk can surface without being labeled resistance.
  4. Repeated misunderstanding changes the explanation, proposal, or context.

First-pass conversation

  • What did people actually say, do, or stop doing?
  • What did they hear the proposal to mean?
  • What seems useful, risky, missing, or imposed?
  • What choice and influence do they really have?
  • What evidence would show that the proposal, not the person, is the problem?

Warning signs to discuss

  • People are called resistant when they disagree or protect legitimate interests.
  • Intent is used to dismiss harmful impact.
  • Imposed change is presented as participation.
  • Silence, compliance, or withdrawal is interpreted without inquiry.
