Capability Conversation - Candor, Inquiry & Safety
Candor, Inquiry & Safety
Create Conditions for Candor, Inquiry, and Safe Challenge
What this capability means: Create conditions in which people can report bad news, ask questions, admit uncertainty, disagree, challenge assumptions and authority, and learn without unacceptable personal or organizational consequences.
Working well when...
- People can raise risks and contradictory evidence early.
- Leaders respond tochallenge with inquiry rather than punishment or dismissal.
- Uncertainty, mistakes, and limits can be named without humiliation.
- Decision processes protect dissent, confidentiality, and affected people.
First-pass conversation
- What happens when someone reports bad news or challenges a senior view?
- Which risks or disagreements are hardest to state openly?
- Where do incentives, authority, workload, or past experience suppress candor?
- Can people admit uncertainty without losing status or opportunity?
- What evidence would show that challenge is becoming safer and more useful?
Warning signs to discuss
- Silence or compliance is treated as agreement.
- Bad newsis filtered, delayed, or reshaped upward.
- People protect identity, status, or role by avoiding inquiry.
- Safety is declared by leaders rather than assessed from experience.
