Solve Specific Problems

The list below represents the common problems we see individuals, teams, and organizations have. They provide both a way of onboarding into the Amplio Learning ourneys as well as learning Amplio on your own with AmpGPT.

The Four Types of Problems We Have

Flow Problems (System Dynamics)
Flow problems occur when work doesn’t move through the system as it should. You see this as delays, too much work in progress, bottlenecks, handoffs, and things not getting finished. These issues are not caused by people working too slowly, but by how the system is structured—how work is started, queued, and transferred. Understanding flow problems means looking at the entire system of work and recognizing how overload, multitasking, and dependencies create delay and reduce effectiveness.

Value Problems
Value problems arise when organizations are not working on the right things, or are not aligned on what actually creates value. This shows up as too many priorities, unclear direction, frequent reprioritization, and work that doesn’t deliver meaningful outcomes. These issues are often rooted in how value is defined, communicated, and agreed upon across stakeholders. Addressing value problems requires clarifying objectives, aligning around outcomes, and ensuring that the work being done is both necessary and impactful.

Capability Development Problems (Perceptual and Learning Dynamics)
Capability development problems occur when individuals and organizations struggle to improve, even when they are trying to do the right things. This includes repeating the same mistakes, improvements not sticking, or people interpreting situations differently and working at cross purposes. These challenges are driven by perceptual dynamics—how people automatically interpret what they see and hear—and learning dynamics—how capability actually develops over time. Because people learn in stages and often revert to familiar patterns under pressure, improving capability requires more than new ideas; it requires working with how people perceive and learn.

Complexity & Uncertainty Problems
Complexity and uncertainty problems arise when outcomes are difficult to predict due to changing conditions, multiple variables, and incomplete information. These show up as surprises, late discovery, rework, and unexpected consequences. Unlike flow or value problems, these cannot be fully resolved through better planning alone. Instead, they require approaches that emphasize fast feedback, small steps, visibility into emerging results, and the ability to adapt as new information becomes available. Successfully dealing with uncertainty means accepting that not everything can be known in advance—and building the capability to respond effectively as things unfold.

    The Core Operating Model

AmpGPT will interact with you to:

    1. Identify the problem
    2. See how the issue manifests across system layers
    3. Understand system causes
    4. Develop layer-specific capabilities
    5. Reinforce with key concepts

You can engage with AmpGPT in the normal manner by:

    1. Go to ChatGPT
    2. Typing in
“Engage as AmpGPT, Success Engineering’s AI companion based on the Amplio system, the Physics of Flow, and the Amplio Learning Kata. Help me think through problems, coaching situations, and learning using the AmpGPT interaction patterns.”
    3. It is suggested to add ‘Use the guided onboarding context.’” so it knows why you’re there. Telling it your role when you describe your problem is also sgugested.

The list below are problems selected because they provide insights into common problems people face and because they provide insights into the core of the Amplio system. Feel free to ask Amplio any question about any problem you are interested in learning how to solve. You can enter any problem you like, however.  For example, you can start with a recognized situation:

    “Everything feels slow”
    “Nothing is finishing”
    “We’re misaligned”

    Problems in Flow (System dynamics)

Work not finishing and / or having too many delays and / or bottlenecks.

Work not finishing can be causes by a combination of the following:

    • not having a well-defined intake process. This causes too much work to start and has much of the work lack visiblity which hurt collaboration.
    • having an inefficient value flow architecture. This shows up as waiting for people on other teams.
    • not using quickest valuable releases (QVRs). This shows up as releases having more content than they needed to be released
    • not having a focus on finishing which causes peopel to start new items when they could be helping finish items already in process.

Remind it to talk about both value flow architectures, not using QVRs, and having too much work in process.

We have too much work in process

Too much work in process can be causes by the same challenges causes work not finishing. Go there for more informaiton.

    We get too many interruptions

    Ask AmpGPPT about this.

Also, sometimes this is due to management not understanding the cost of interruptions. Here’s a short presentation on that.

Concepts introduced: intake process, value flow architecture, QVRs, focus on finishing.

    Value

    Developing more than we needed

Ask AmpGPT about Quickest Valuable Releases (QVRs)

Reworking requirements as we move forward

Make sure AmpGPT tells you about objective stories.

Significant rework occurs as we get clearer understanding of our stakeholder's needs

You may be focusing on requirements instead of objectives.

Ask AmpGPT how Value Drive Objectives and obective stories might help.

    Difficulty getting alignment across teams

Lack of alignment is typically caused by

    • not having clarity on our essential stakeholders’ values, success criteria and constraints.
    • not using QVRs (larger sized items creates more competition for resources
Discovering that a team has built the wrong requirements.

This can be viewed from two different perspectives.  The business / product management side may think the requirements were clear but the team messed it up. The team may feel the requirements were unclear to begin with.

This is a systemic problem, not a people problem.

Ask AmpGPT for more giving it “we discover teams have built the wrong requirements.”

    AmpGPT might respond with

When you say “discovering late what the requirements really are”, that could mean several different things:

    • You’re building the wrong thing and only realizing it after delivery
    • Stakeholders are changing their minds late
    • The real constraints (regulatory, technical, operational) show up late
    • Teams are interpreting the same thing differently (AIR effect)
    • Or the work itself is inherently exploratory, but you’re treating it as defined

    These have very different causes.

Solutions may be Value Driven Objectives, quicker feedback, Objective stories.

Concepts introduced: QVRs, Value Driven Objectives, objective stories, the need for quick feedback.

Capability Development (Perceptual and Learning Dynamics)

    People resist trying things

Ask AmpGPT about this. This can be for several reasons – there isn’t a safe environment, people don’t understand why they are being asked to do what they are being asked to do.

    Learning is slow

If you haven’t alreday, review these topic on the capability development constraints page:

    • The pickup sticks model of conveying new concepts
    • Learning happens in stages
    • Why theory is so important

Or just ask AmpGPT about this.

It’s also possible that people are not improving their understanding of what’s happening. Ask AmpGPT about double-loop learning.

We're told just to follow the framework

    Ask AmpGPT about this.

I'm not clear what my role as a coach and/or consultant is to help others.

Read the following and ask AmpGPT for clarification:

We get a lot of surprises

Rework from unknownswe don't know what to do when we have problems
