Interaction-Driven Learning with AmpGPT
The Amplio Learning Kata is not about coaching Amplio. It is about how to coach effectively in any environment by attending to three governing dynamics: system dynamics, cognitive dynamics, and learning dynamics. We call it the Amplio Learning Kata because Amplio is grounded in these three—but the method itself is not tied to a framework. It is tied to how work actually flows, how people actually think, and how people actually learn
Most coaching approaches focus on only one or two of these. They may address system issues without understanding how people interpret what they see. Or they may focus on mindset without addressing the structural constraints shaping behavior. Or they may introduce practices without enabling learning to take hold. Effective coaching requires attending to all three at the same time—seeing the system, understanding how people perceive and respond to it, and guiding learning in a way that builds real capability. Without this integration, improvement efforts stall or fail to sustain.
Interaction-driven learning is based on the Amplio Learning Kata. It is a system for learning in the workplace, not outside of it.
You read a small amount, interact with the ideas using AmpGPT, apply them immediately, and refine your understanding through real feedback.
We Don’t Need More Learning Content
We Need a Different Way to Learn
Most learning doesn’t fail because people don’t try.
It fails because it is disconnected from the work.
You read something.
You attend a class.
You try to apply it later.
And then it fades.
Not because you didn’t care.
Because the structure of the class wasn’t designed for learning to stick.
This Is a Different Approach
This is not a course.
It is not a reading plan.
It is not “AI-assisted studying.”
It is a structured learning loop embedded in your real work.
A system where:
- knowledge, application, and learning are continuously integrated
- learning happens in context, not after the fact
- progress comes from small, applied steps—not large efforts
This is interaction-driven learning.
The Learning Loop (This Structure Is Critical for Success)
The effectiveness of this approach depends on following a simple structure.
- Read a topic
Not a chapter. Not a binge. A small, meaningful increment. - Engage with AmpGPT
Ask questions. Explore. Challenge your understanding. - Apply something in your work
Small. Concrete. Real. - Reflect and refine
What happened? What did you see? What changed?
Then repeat.
This is the structure.
You can vary:
- how much you read
- how often you do it
- how deep you go
But not the loop itself.
Without application and interaction, learning degrades into consumption.
How to Use AmpGPT
AmpGPT is not there to give you answers.
It is a thinking partner.
Use it to:
go deeper
- “Explain this more clearly.”
“What distinctions am I missing?”
apply ideas
- “How would this show up in my situation?”
- “Where might I try this?”
prepare conversations
- “Help me explain this to my team.”
- “Role-play a skeptical manager.”
challenge your thinking
- “What assumptions am I making?”
- “What am I likely misunderstanding?”
This interaction is what turns ideas into capability.
Degrees of Freedom (Where You Adjust)
The structure is fixed.
Within it, you have freedom:
- Cadence
Daily, twice a week, weekly—choose what fits your work. - Depth
Some days you explore deeply. Some days you just try one small thing. - Entry Point
You can start with any of the books below.
AmpGPT Allows You To “Practice” As Well
AmpGPT goes well beyond interaction-driven learning.
You can use it to practice coaching by having it do role playing with you. You can learn how to do this here.
You can also use it to help you run a diagnostic where you work. This can give you direction as to where to apply your new coaching skill.s You can earn more about this here.
If You Want Support
If you want help while doing this, I run public AmpGPT sessions each month.
Go here to learn where they are and how to attend.
These are a way to:
- see how others are using this
- ask questions
- deepen your understanding
- improve your ability to use AmpGPT
Books available for Interaction-Driven Learning
Where to Start
The Amplio Learning Kata (now available on LeanPub)
Go here to learn more about the book.
Focus: How people learn, and how to guide that learning
Use this when:
- you want to coach others
- you want to help people see what they’re missing
- you want to improve how learning actually happens
Pay attention to:
- how distinctions are introduced
- how learning is staged
- how resistance is interpreted
Try:
- explaining a concept differently
- guiding someone instead of telling them
- noticing how people interpret what you say
The Physics of Flow in Knowledge Work: Governing Dynamics for Product Development and Services
Go here to learn more about the book.
Focus: How work actually moves—and what slows it down
Use this when:
- work feels slower than it should
- nothing seems to finish
- there is constant pressure but little progress
Pay attention to:
- delays
- work in progress
- feedback timing
- dependencies
Try:
- reducing WIP
- focusing on finishing
- identifying where delays are introduced
Raising the Bar of What’s Possible
Overcoming the Learned Helplessness Plaguing Modern Organizations and Communities
Go here to learn more about the book.
Focus: Agency, constraints, and what limits people’s effectiveness
Use this when:
- you feel stuck
- others feel stuck
- improvement efforts stall
Pay attention to:
- where people believe they have no options
- how constraints are interpreted
- how small actions shift momentum
Try:
- identifying one small action within a constraint
- reframing a situation from “can’t” to “what’s possible”
- helping others see options they’ve overlooked
This Is Not About Reading More
It is about increasing your capability by learning differently.
- Not more information
- Not more frameworks
- Not more practices
But:
A system where knowledge is no longer consumed—it is interacted with.
Start Small
You don’t need a plan.
You don’t need permission.
Start with:
- a few pages
- one question
- one small action
Then repeat.
